The successor to Microsofts first video game console, the Xbox. The Xbox 360 expands upon the originals strong PC roots while being positioned as the complete center of media integration with many built in functions and a high level of Internet connectivity. The 360 is the first next-gen console in what Microsoft touts as the HD-Era, the seventh generation of consoles, which includes the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii. With the Xbox 360 Microsoft has advanced graphical capabilities to the next-generation featuring a 3-core CPU from IBM and a new custom-built graphics card from ATi. Out of the three seventh generation console from a hardware perspective the 360 shares the most similarity to consoles in the sixth, there are no drastic changes to the controller, a standard DVD drive and the use of memory cards. One of the biggest changes that Microsoft made in its transition from Xbox to 360 is ... PROS: (1) Excellent online gaming support with Xbox Live! (2) Broad selection of titles. (3) Full 1080p HD gaming and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound. (4) Large selection of games (5) PC connection to play video and audio files (Windows XP Media Center or Vista) ... CONS: (1) Have to pay a subscription for online gaming (Gold subscription = $50/year) (2) Very loud fans and disk drive (3) Prices of Xbox360 Marketplace items are steep (4) Overheating issues. (5) Slow to fix and return broken consoles

THE GOOD: Superior selection of games, including several console-exclusive titles; all games in high-definition; easy-to-use Dashboard interface; excellent online gaming and communications via Xbox Live; plays hundreds of (but not all) original Xbox titles; doubles as a superior digital media hub and Windows Media Center extender; online Marketplace allows for easy purchases of downloadable full-scale games, mini-games, movies, and TV shows; latest version offers HDMI output with 1080p support. THE BAD: Early versions of the console prone to "red ring of death" system crash; noisy exhaust fan and DVD drive; gigantic oversize power supply; no built-in wireless networking or flash media reader; DVD playback has substandard video quality; support for next-gen HD DVD movies requires a bulky external accessory; 20GB hard drive fills up very quickly; online gaming requires a paid subscription to Xbox Live. THE BOTTOM LINE: With its extensive digital media features, a superior online service, and an excellent game library, the Xbox 360 remains the game console to beat.
