The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is a general purpose lens built for photography enthusiasts. The focal length is equivalet to 24-136mm in 35mm format, allowing for wide-angle to telephoto shots. Image stabilization is built in, accounting for slight movements while the shutter is being released. The autofocus is designed to function reliably under various lighting conditions, and manual focusing is possible as well. Subjects can be as close as 1.15 feet to the lens and still be in proper focus. This lens accepts standard 72mm screw type filters. Features Wide-angle to telephoto range Focal Length: 15 - 85mm Maximum Aperture: 1:3.5-5.6 Image stabilization Autofocus Lens Construction: 17 elements in 12 groups Focus Adjustment: Inner focusing system with USM Closest Focusing Distance: 1.15 ft./0.35m Filter Size: 72mm ... PROS: (1) nice focal range - 24-136mm equivalent, quite wide (2) sharp all over, even wide open (3) not much light falloff (vignetting) - only about 1 stop wide open (4) nice bokeh (5) image stabilization for a 4 stop improvement ... CONS: (1) APS-C crop sensor only (2) noticeable distortion at all lengths (3) doesnt come with a lens hood (4) unimpressive aperture - strictly amateur, F/3.5-5.6, poorer in low light, cant isolate subjects as easily (5) not far from the cost of a professional full frame fixed aperture lens

  • 4 Stars Canon EF-S 15-85mm IS USM lens review at Camera Labs

The EF-S 15-85mm IS USM is arguably Canon's best all-round general-purpose zoom for its range of cropped-frame EOS bodies. It delivers a compelling focal range with decent optical quality, quick and quiet focusing and Image Stabilisation. Don't get us wrong, it's not perfect and there's a number of reasons why you may prefer a different model. In our full review of the lens at Camera Labs you'll find detailed results comparing the image quality with the EF-S 18-55mm IS and EF-S 18-135mm IS kit lenses, along with the older EF-S 17-85mm IS USM, which it essentially replaces. So if you're interested in an up-market general-purpose lens for a Canon body, check out our review and be sure to take a look at our HD video demonstration which shows it working in practice.
